How it works/Rules/FAQ
The object of this little 'thon is for BtVS/Ats fanwork creators to get more of what they love: feedback.

How It Works | Rules | FAQ

How It Works

To sign up, you'll fill out a comment on the sign-in post (when it's posted). You'll be asked about your reading preferences as well as anything you cannot or will not read. You will also be given the opportunity to list 3 of your works for your reviewers to view.

When the sign-up period is complete, you will receive the information from three different creators to review. You are only required to give feedback for one piece for each creator, but by all means, you are welcome to leave feedback on all listed.

After a period of time, all of the works will be listed in a community post and you will be welcome to review any additional works, with the understanding that you leave feedback on those you are assigned first.

In return, you should receive at least three reviews for the piece(s) you choose.

Rules

1) Make sure that all works submitted have appropriate warnings, in particular for character death, non-consensual sex and sex with under-aged participants.

2) NO FLAMES. You can always find something nice to say, and if the creator is okay with concrit, make sure it is constructive!

3) Look over your assignment as soon as you get it! I will do my best to match up the participants so that each creator on your list should have at least one fic you feel comfortable reading. If you discover there is something on your list you are uncomfortable reading, please let me know ASAP.

4) Only one fic over 10,000 words is allowed as one of your submissions for feedback. The other two must be less than this, so that your reviewers have time to get to everyone.

5) No one-sentence reviews. I'm not going to go around counting words, but the point of this 'thon is to get meaningful feedback, so your review needs to have a three-sentence minimum. There is no maximum.

6) Round One will be focused on BtVS/Ats works only. Works containing comic content are allowed, but they should be written/created in a way that no prior knowledge of the comics is necessary in order for your reviewer to understand.

FAQ:

I never know what to say! What do I do?

Before your assignments are sent out, we will be posting a discussion post for what makes good feedback. This will be collected and distilled and will be posted as a guide to help you.

What do I do if one of my fics to review is at Dreamwidth or AO3 and I don't have an ID there?

You can always post anonymously, but I recommend you use OpenID. There is an FAQ entry on Livejournal about this here, and a short tutorial by myself here, but I've broken down the process below:

On Dreamwidth, follow these steps:
1 - open a new comment
2 - click the radio button that says "OpenID"
3 - a box will open that says "Identity URL:". Type in "YOURUSERNAME.livejournal.com". I recommend checking the "log in" box.
4 - type up your comment and press "post comment"
5 - you will be taken to an LJ screen asking if you want to share content - this is so that the other site can link to your LJ. You can choose to say "yes; just this time" or "yes; always". Choose an option.

On AO3, follow these steps:
1 - at the top right-hand corner of the screen, click "Log In"
2 - a grey tab will pop down. At the far right, click "openid login"
3 - type "YOURUSERNAME.livejournal.com" in the blank then click "log in"
4 - you will be taken to an LJ screen asking if you want to share content - this is so that the other site can link to your LJ. You can choose to say "yes; just this time" or "yes; always". Choose an option.

I write crossovers. Can I still participate?

Unfortunately, you can't *officially* participate in the exchange process. However, by January 15, a full list of all the stories will be posted so that any members can add feedback to other works than the ones they were assigned. If you write crossovers, you can fill out the sign-up sheet, writing "crossovers for master list only" in the "anything else" blank, and your fics won't be part of the exchange, but they'll be on the master list for others to browse through and give feedback on. You'll be more than welcome to browse that same list and add some feedback of your own. Oh! and make sure to include the crossover fandom somewhere in your signup. Maybe with the paring part. :)

I don't have fanworks to submit, but I'd still like to participate by giving feedback!

Bless your cotton socks! You are more than welcome to feedback all you like. By January 15, the masterlist will be going up and you can browse and feedback to your heart's content! May your life be filled with cookies and hugs!

Woo! What do you think about the rules/numbers and such? Do you think 3 fics to review is too much? not enough??
velvetwhipvelvetwhip on December 1st, 2011 04:32 am (UTC)
I have to go over it more thoroughly when I actually have time, but as of now I think it's awesome and I think three sounds perfect.

Yay! Definitely look over every thing when you have a moment. Right now, it's just us two on the books, so I'm just trying to get things down. I'd like to get this going soonish, I think. :)
D: BtVS: Ritual with piedenyce on December 4th, 2011 06:46 am (UTC)
Very cool idea. Would love to participate, but sadly these days I mostly write crossovers.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 4th, 2011 06:48 am (UTC)
Ah. I'm not sure I could swing those with your reviewers unless they were written like the crossover characters could be treated like OC's - that is, the 'verse and everything is consistent with the Buffyverse, and no knowledge of the crossover canon is necessary. Use your judgment. We'd love to have you if you could make it fit.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 7th, 2011 05:42 am (UTC)
Just in case you were interested, I'd like to draw your attention to my response to hezio2 below. If you wished, you could participate with your crossovers in the manner I described there.

Just FYI. :)

I remember there was talk a while ago that AO3 is ramping down OpenID because so few people were using it, so I'm not sure it it works anymore.

But it is possible to comment without an account there (you just need an email address) and also, you can ask AO3 support for a batch of invites to give out to people if you're running an exchange or a fest of some sort.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 4th, 2011 11:34 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback, hon! I just tried the OpenID thing over at AO3 a couple of days ago, so it did work then.

Still, I'll keep that information in mind, and I think I've a couple of invites that I can use if anyone needs one. :)
tangwstyltangwstyl on December 4th, 2011 03:42 pm (UTC)
Sounds Like a great idea, although I'm slightly concerned about the length restriction on the additional pieces. I tend to be very wordy and the 3 fics that immediate came to my mind weren't any of my one-shots, but oh well. I suppose, since you're asking for an in-depth a analysis that makes sense. I apologize for any mistakes or spelling errors, but I can't see the words in light blue against the white background at all.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 4th, 2011 11:38 pm (UTC)
I realize that some people will have issues with the length restraints, and I wish I could make everyone happy. :( The reason these have been put in place was to make sure things were more even, i.e., an author doesn't ask for feedback on a couple of 1-5K pieces, then have to read 3 novels - that's a very different time commitment. I do think that at some point, if this round goes well, we can see about doing a long-fic only round, that way things are more even. Then again, this is the first round, and I'm still learning what will and won't work!

I apologize for the legibility issues - I believe they've all been resolved - please let me know if there are any other issues!
tangwstyltangwstyl on December 5th, 2011 04:27 am (UTC)
I realized that the length restraints made sense, I was just bemoaning the fact that I'd like some serious feedback on a couple of my stories that I was nervous/anxious about. And don't get me wrong, I've gotten some really great feedback on them, but . . . (isn't there always a but?) I suppose I wanted more than just the standard responses. Does that make me greedy?

Ahhhh, thank you so much for fixing that. I have such a hard time reading (even on the computer and my kindle) that I can't do much of it any more.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 5th, 2011 04:29 am (UTC)
Not greedy at all. And, like I said, if all goes well, we can do another round with long fics and you can post 'em up. :)
rrannerranne on December 5th, 2011 03:46 am (UTC)
I don't mind longer fics. So feel free to give me longish ones. 110-160K word range is Ok. Not for all three of course, but a long a med and a short or two longs and a short are fine.
Rebcake: ats_illyriarebcake on December 4th, 2011 07:47 pm (UTC)
I second Tang's comment on the illegibility of the comm layout.

However, this does sound like an excellent idea. I have Thoughts. I attended an intensive feedback workshop at the last WriterCon, and it was very clear and helpful. liz_marcs was the coordinator, so she probably has e-versions of her comment forms and things. I could probably dig them up, as well.

I suspect that people would be more willing to go into detailed concrit in a PM, rather than a comment, for various reasons, including word limits on comments. So for writers that would be interested in receiving that, it would be good if it were an option to do it that way.

When I am reading, I usually leave feeback on works I enjoy unless there is a flaw or series of flaws that throw me out of the story. I don't mean simple typos (though that can do it, too), but more of a "something" that doesn't work. So, I wonder what those things are in my own work. From both the writer and reader stand point, I would be most interested in leaving and receiving feedback that would address those "problem areas". And I'd rather do it privately.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 4th, 2011 11:42 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback about the comm's layout - I believe the legibility issues should be more or less fixed - please let me know if there are any more issues.

Thanks for the tip about liz_marcs, I'll contact her about the comment forms!

As for concrit, each author is given the opportunity to either op in or out of concrit, and give the reviewer the desired location for that concrit. It is STILL up to the reviewer where they deliever their concrit, however. If your author says in a comment is fine and you'd feel better about putting it into a PM, that's perfectly acceptable. If the author likes, they can re-copy your concrit and put it in one of the comments if they want it there. The restrictions here are going to be pretty loose and I don't want anyone doing something they're not comfortable with. I do hope that participants will feel free to ask about specific issues as they come up!
Almatricmysedai on December 6th, 2011 08:16 am (UTC)
Do you have to have three stories to sign up? I mean, I can probably polish up some one-shots I have lying around if I had to, but I wasn't really planning on posting them. They're kind of crack!fic-y. Also, are WIPs acceptable? I'd love to get some good feedback on my fic!
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 7th, 2011 05:40 am (UTC)
WIP's are perfectly acceptable. The reason for 3 fics is so it'll make them easier to match up. But if you want to go ahead and sign-up, I'll do my best to make it work. Now, I will say that if I can't, you won't be an "official" part of the exchange, but I'll put your fic up on the masterlist and you'll be welcome to add any feedback to any of the stories on the list.

Does that sound okay??
noturbaby: b/d winterhezio2 on December 7th, 2011 05:16 am (UTC)
Like denyce, I mostly write crossovers. But I would love to read some of these. Can I read even if I don't offer fics for review. (Not that I wouldn't love some constructive concrit, just I don't fit the criteria this time.)
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 7th, 2011 05:37 am (UTC)
Hmmm...here's what I can do - I can't make *assignments* for crossovers, but if you'll fill out the signup post with some of your fics, and in the "anything else" blank just put "all crossovers - just for list", I'll add all of your fics to the master list for those who want to browse and add *extra* concrit. You won't be an *official* part of the exchange, but you'll be more than welcome to browse that list yourself and offer concrit to anything that tickles your fancy!

Does that sound acceptable?
noturbaby: b/d winterhezio2 on December 7th, 2011 06:20 am (UTC)
Wow, more than acceptable. Thanks, I was just hoping to read some interesting fics this winter. :)
I love these kind of communities.
Andie: perfect pairnaughtynyx88 on December 7th, 2011 08:16 pm (UTC)
Are unfinished fics acceptable?
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 8th, 2011 02:01 am (UTC)
YES!
Snick: Cordelia excitedsnickfic on December 8th, 2011 01:23 am (UTC)
What a wonderful idea! I think this is just about the niftiest thing since sliced bread.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 8th, 2011 01:58 am (UTC)
Woo! I'm glad you think so! :)
Emmieangearia on December 8th, 2011 02:48 am (UTC)
Great idea! I'm as excited for giving detailed feedback as I am to receive it!
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 8th, 2011 02:58 am (UTC)
Wooo! I know a lot of authors will be thrilled to get it, too!
Shapinglightshapinglight on December 8th, 2011 01:46 pm (UTC)
This is a great idea. I'm interested in theory, but what are the time restrictions? ie. how soon will participants have to produce the f/b are getting the stories?
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 9th, 2011 03:54 pm (UTC)
I believe you'll have about a month to get this done. Please check the dates post for specifics. I can't link because I'm on my phone but its on the sticky post!
Shapinglightshapinglight on December 9th, 2011 04:40 pm (UTC)
Okay. Thanks.
rrannerranne on December 16th, 2011 01:44 pm (UTC)
Can I add One?
Question- I have two on my list, can I add another, it isn't posted yet, but I'll try to get it to AO3 over the weekend (it won't work any where else- it is BTVS, but a rare paring (if not previously unheard of- Darla/Lydia (Watcher's Council.)) It is a WIP and my first attmept at F/F slash and I'd really like some feedback on it.
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 19th, 2011 04:34 am (UTC)
Re: Can I add One?
Yes! (Sorry, I've been away all weekend!) My preference will be for you to just completely fill out the sign-up template again, and I'll just delete the other. That way I'll have everything in one place. :)
Mary Lee: Candymaryfic on December 19th, 2011 04:16 am (UTC)
*bounce* *squish* I so want to play. This was such a great idea!
The Anti-OTPsnowpuppies on December 19th, 2011 04:31 am (UTC)
Thanks, hon! I'm glad you think so. Here's hoping it works well!
0_Ruthless_00_ruthless_0 on May 23rd, 2013 09:19 pm (UTC)
Would I get away with naming two general fics, and then a crossover to go on the master list at the end of things? Or something like that?
snowpuppies.dreamwidth.orgsnowpuppies.dreamwidth.org on May 23rd, 2013 10:56 pm (UTC)
Sounds fine. Just make sure you very clearly label the crossover, so I can look out for it.
